Dr. Matthew Markham is Professor of Voice, Director of Opera, and the Voice Area Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he received the University Excellence in Teaching Award in 2018.  He received his Doctor of Music degree in Voice Performance from Florida State University, specializing in applied voice, vocal pedagogy, song literature, and diction. International teaching includes the Ameropa Solo and Chamber Music Festival in Prague, Czech Republic and the International Lyric Academy in Vicenza, Italy. He has also been affiliated as a performer, teacher, and adjudicator for the Metropolitan International Music Festival in New York City. He has previously taught large private studios, been on the faculty of DePauw University, and has taught all levels of students ranging undergraduate through doctoral students at Florida State University and as a faculty member of NYU Steinhardt.

Dr. Markham’s students have won competitions on a regional, national, and international level, and are regularly accepted into summer apprenticeship programs and to reputable graduate school programs in voice and opera performance throughout the country. At the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Dr. Markham has been the director and producer of numerous opera productions. The 2023 production of Dial M for Moore Menotti: Gallantry, The Telephone, and The Old Maid and the Thief won national award recognition as being named a Finalist in both The American Prize Competition for college opera productions and the Ernst Bacon American Music Award. Additionally, the same production tied for 2nd Place in the college division for opera productions in the National Opera Association competition.

Dr. Markham is currently the Wisconsin NATS President and a member of the National Opera Association. In addition to his primary passion for teaching, he is an avid interpreter of the art song repertoire, performing and teaching the works of the most famous composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. He made his debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2013.

Dr. Markham’s first international recording, featuring Antonio Rosetti’s Requiem Es-Dur (Murray H15), was released commercially in 2011. He was also a member of The Marble Choir in New York City and can be heard in their recording “It’s About Love” released in 2013.
